Racing at Chester has a unique history. Set on the banks of the River Dee, the racecourse site was originally a harbour during the Roman settlement of the city in the dark ages. As the years passed and the river silted up, navigation became impossible.
Visit Chester horse races and you’ll see towards the centre of the site there is a raided mound bearing a cross known as a ‘rood’ – hence the name ‘Roodee’, a corruption of ‘Rood Eye’ meaning the ‘Island of the Cross’.
